Start with the application and installation location. Then identify the mounting method, ceiling or pole height, environmental rating, light distribution, voltage, controls, color temperature, lumen output, and emergency or code-related requirements. These details usually narrow the catalog to the most relevant fixture family.

High bay fixtures are designed for elevated mounting heights and generally provide higher output with distributions suited to large open spaces or aisles. Low bay applications use lower mounting heights and usually require different output and glare control. The right choice depends on mounting height, spacing, room dimensions, obstructions, and required light levels.

Warehouses commonly use round or linear high bays, strip lights, vapor tight fixtures, task lighting, emergency equipment, and controls. Aisle configuration, rack height, ceiling height, occupancy patterns, dust, temperature, and the visual task influence the correct fixture and distribution.

Both are widely used in suspended ceilings. LED panels typically have a thin profile and broad luminous surface. Troffers use a deeper housing and may incorporate lenses, reflectors, baskets, or optical systems that provide different visual characteristics and distribution.

Vapor tight fixtures are appropriate where moisture, dust, dirt, humidity, splashing, or demanding conditions require a sealed fixture. Common applications include parking garages, washdown areas, food-processing spaces, utility buildings, industrial facilities, covered outdoor areas, and some cold-storage environments. Always verify the product's specific ratings.

Many fixtures can be converted using compatible LED lamps, tubes, retrofit kits, light bars, or internal components. Compatibility depends on the fixture, socket, ballast or driver, wiring, voltage, available space, thermal conditions, listing requirements, and manufacturer instructions. In some cases, replacing the complete fixture is the better long-term solution.

Identify the existing lamp wattage, base, ballast type, voltage, fixture dimensions, mounting orientation, and application. Some LED HID replacement lamps operate with compatible ballasts, while others require ballast bypass. Compare delivered light, distribution, thermal limitations, enclosed-fixture approval, and installation instructions.

There is no single best color temperature. Warmer 3000K light may suit hospitality and decorative spaces, 3500K is common in comfortable interiors, 4000K is widely used in offices, schools, healthcare facilities, and work areas, and 5000K may be selected for some industrial and outdoor applications.

Required lumens depend on target light levels, room dimensions, mounting height, distribution, spacing, surface reflectances, obstructions, depreciation, and the work being performed. A photometric layout is the best way to estimate fixture quantity, spacing, uniformity, and expected light levels for a specific project.

Selectable products include field-adjustable settings that allow the installer to choose from specified wattage, lumen, or color-temperature options. These products simplify inventory and provide installation flexibility, but the selected setting must still fit the application, controls, circuit, and project requirements.

Occupancy sensors control lighting in response to detected presence or motion. Photocells respond to ambient light levels and are commonly used to turn outdoor lighting on at dusk and off at dawn. Some fixtures combine both functions with scheduling, dimming, or networked controls.

A wet-location rating indicates that a product is evaluated for locations where water or other liquids may contact electrical components under the conditions covered by its listing and instructions. Damp-location and wet-location ratings are not interchangeable.

Outdoor lighting can be exposed to electrical disturbances caused by utility events, switching, wiring conditions, and nearby lightning activity. Many fixtures include surge protection, but the level varies. Some projects justify additional protective devices or a coordinated surge-protection strategy.
